Stay sane with our top tips

By Professional Organizer, Kim Salisbury

Looking at an overstuffed or messy dresser on a daily basis can be very frustrating. However, you need not resign to this fate of perpetual frustration because there are a number of tips that you can implement to restore order to your dresser. Here are 9 tips on how to to organize your dresser drawers like a professional  and ones I recommend here at Home Method Co.

Tip #1: Empty Your Drawers

One important rule that you should never ignore when you are trying to get your drawers organized is completely emptying those drawers. Start with a clean slate. It will be a lot easier for you to refold, sort, and/or rearrange your belongings once they are out of the drawers.

Tip #2: Declutter the Dresser

It is possible that your disorganized dresser is harboring a lot of clutter that doesn’t belong there. As you seek to restore order to the dresser, take a close look at each item and ask yourself whether you really need it. For example, is it necessary to hang onto that top that you haven’t worn in more than a year? Purge the drawers of all the clutter and you will stand a better chance of maintaining an organized dresser.

Tip #3: Categorize Your Belongings

Professional organizing succeeds by recognizing patterns or categories and putting various items in the categories that make the most sense. You too can borrow this approach as you restore order to your dresser. For example, put all your tops or shirts in one drawer, and take it a step further by sub-categorizing them (tank tops alone, t-shirts alone, etc.). Another way to organize your belongings is by using color as an organizing principle. For instance, you could group white shirts in a drawer, black shirts in another, etc.

Tip #4: Avoid Folding Bulky Items

When you fold bulky items, such as sweatshirts and jeans, a lot of storage space will be quickly gobbled up. The best home organizers agree that bulky items are better stored in a hanging bag inside the closet or folded and stored in a container under the bed. When you devote the dresser drawers to storing lighter items, you will quickly discover that you can store a lot more than you initially thought possible.

Tip #5: Make Organizers Your Friend

Divided drawer organizers help to separate different small items that you have kept in your drawers. For example, organizers are good to separate different colors of socks or other small items. The beauty of using this method to organize these small items is that finding what you want will be a breeze even when you are in a hurry.

Tip #6: Keep Seasons in Mind

As you organize your dresser, don’t forget to consider the seasonal changes during the year. Your storage space needs to be organized on the basis of what you need for each season. For example, it is perfectly okay to keep your off-season clothes in the basement or attic, but not all people have the luxury of such storage space. In that case, put out of season clothes in a separate drawer so that when that season comes around, you can rotate the storage to reflect this change.

Tip #7: Start from the Top

I always say that the way you organize the top of your dresser will set the pace for the way in which you will maintain the contents of your drawers. When you keep the dresser top clutter-free, chances are high that your organizational consciousness will carry over to the drawers and any other storage space you have available.

Tip #8: Make Full Use of Extra Drawer Space

If you are fortunate enough to have empty space left in your dresser drawers, don’t let that space remain unused. Instead, get creative and find things to keep in that additional space. For instance, it is perfectly okay to store your linens, gift wrap or even your office supplies in any leftover space in the dresser drawers. Doing this will make it easy to keep other storage spaces organized as well.

Tip #9: Make the System Personal

The best dresser organizing system is the one that you will actually use. Therefore, use whatever dresser organizing method that works for you since you will need to maintain that system on a daily basis. Once you have that system in place, keep tweaking it until you have it nailed!
