With Memorial Day right around the corner, plenty of us in Sacramento and Silicon Valley are looking forward to spending quality time with friends and family outdoors. Whether we’re hosting BBQ’s, enjoying the pool, or taking in some sun outside, we all love a nice backyard hangout. However, a cluttered and messy outdoor space can quickly turn relaxation into stress. As your trusted Sacramento home organizer, we’re here to help you transform your backyard into a calming outdoor oasis just in time for the long weekend with these tried and tested tips to organize your backyard
The following tips are a comprehensive guide on decluttering and organizing your backyard. Which, in turn, will hopefully make it the perfect setting for the long Memorial Day weekend and future celebrations all summer long. Whether you need a quick cleanup or a complete overhaul, these tips to organize your back yard will help you and your guests feel at peace.
1. Patio Furniture
Kick things off by taking stock of your patio furniture. Some of these pieces may be older, ripped, or sun-damaged. If feasible, begin by replacing some of these items or repairing the salvageable ones. Once sorted, begin cleaning and arranging your pieces to accommodate your guests.
2. Outdoor Toys & Sports Equipment
We all have those stray and forgotten toys, pool accessories, or sports equipment from seasons past that lay forgotten in the sun. It’s time to gather all types of toys and sports equipment (if any) from the social areas and store them in their designated areas. Be sure to analyze if any items can be disposed of or donated as needed, as some can be broken or worn out.
3. Pool & Pool Accessories
Nothing can turn animated guests off more than a dirty pool. After the long Winter months end and the time to take that cover off comes around, we know that cleaning that pool is the last thing you want to do. However, it’s necessary to dig in and skim the surface to remove leaves and debris. Be sure to brush the pool walls and vacuum the bottom. Always make a note to check the chemical levels and adjust them if needed.
4. Garden Tools & Supplies
For those of you with a shed or storage box of gardening tools, it’s time to take stock and sort it out! Be sure to dispose of rusty, broken, or unusable tools and donate what is no longer needed. Sort and organize any sort of seeds, fertilizers, pots, and other gardening tools for easy locating later on.
5. Grill & BBQ
Now, turn to your trusty grill and/or outdoor kitchen. Make sure your grill is clean and in good repair. Organize all your grilling tools and accessories, and ensure you have enough propane or charcoal for your cookout to avoid any cooking delays on the day of your event.
6. Planters & Pots
For the gardeners with never-ending accessories, group your pots and planters together for a neat appearance. Discard any broken or unused pots, and repot plants if needed.
7. Outdoor Decorations
Plenty of frequent party-planners tend to have a lot of aesthetic lighting in their backyard that can be harder to maintain. Clean and arrange your outdoor decorations. Store any seasonal items that aren’t currently in use and repair or discard anything that’s damaged.
8. Outdoor Lighting
Check and clean all outdoor lights. Replace any burnt-out bulbs and organize any wiring to keep everything secure
9. Trash & Recycling Bins
A large forgotten item that people tend to neglect is the trash and recycling area. Make sure your bins are clean and properly labeled. Place them in a designated area away from the main seating to ensure they’re easily accessible for guests.
10. Rugs & Mats
Clean and shake out any rugs or mats. Replace worn-out items and arrange rugs to create defined seating areas for a more organized look.
11. General Cleanup
Remove any debris, leaves, or clutter from your yard. Sweep or hose down pathways and patios, and trim any overgrown plants or bushes to keep your outdoor space looking its best.
By following these tips, you can ensure your backyard is organized, inviting, and ready for all your Memorial Day festivities.
