Spring has arrived, and with it comes the season of Spring Cleaning! The perfect place to kick off this rejuvenation process? Your garage. When we tackle a project to organize an entire house, the garage is typically our starting point.

The reason is simple: your garage probably serves as a holding area for items you no longer use, making it the prime spot for decluttering. This initial purge effectively frees up the necessary space for the rest of your project.

Here’s a checklist to help you: Garage Spring Cleaning Checklist

First

Empty the garage completely, categorizing items into piles for keeping, donating, or disposing. Be aware that many items, including mattresses, damaged furniture, and large appliances, cannot be donated and must be disposed of properly. After separating trash into specific types (e.g., household hazardous waste, recyclables, e-waste), focus on sorting the keepers. Organize these into detailed categories such as sports gear, gardening tools, or holiday decorations, and store them in matching bins of various sizes to keep categories distinct and manageable.

Second

With your garage emptied, take the opportunity to clean thoroughly, addressing floors, cobwebs, and even adding a fresh coat of paint if necessary. Install shelving on the walls to maximize vertical space and use clear, labeled bins for easy identification and access. Labeling is crucial for maintaining organization and ensuring everyone knows where items belong.

Finally

Reserve some space for future acquisitions, recognizing that items from the house will likely find their way into the garage. The goal of starting with the garage in a whole-house organization project is to clear out clutter and create a system that’s easy to maintain.
