Looking for a custom closet with built-in washer and dryer? This Sacramento-area project shows how we turn a primary closet into a one-stop dressing and laundry hub—stacked appliances, smart drawers, adjustable shelves, and dedicated zones—so clothes move from hanger to hamper to clean without ever leaving the room. Designed and organized by Home Method Co for everyday calm and efficiency. Here’s what our clients were looking for:

  • Stackable washer–dryer inside the closet

  • Drawers for everyday pieces

  • Room for hats, handbags, shoes, and long dresses

  • Easy maintenance (labels, logical zones, nothing “fussy”)

The Layout

We started with a clean, U-shaped system in a bright white finish with warm brass hardware to keep the space light and timeless. From there, we built out dedicated zones:

  • Laundry hub: A stacked Samsung washer/dryer anchors the left wall with closed cabinetry above for detergents, stain sticks, mesh bags, and extras you don’t want on display. Counter-height shelves next to the machines create a mini folding perch.

  • Drawer bank: Five deep drawers at center hold tees, underthings, workout gear, and pajamas—sized to the client’s actual clothing so nothing gets crammed.

  • Hanging space (short + long): Double-hang for shirts and pants, with a long-hang bay for dresses and coats.

  • Shoe towers: Adjustable shelves mean flats, heels, and sneakers each get the right height. No more toe-overhang or wasted inches.

  • Accessories: Open cubbies for handbags, plus slide-out racks for ties and belts so they’re visible and wrinkle-free.

  • Top-shelf display: The hat collection finally has a runway—easy to see, easy to put back.

How We Organized It

Design gets you 80% of the way there. The final 20%—our favorite part—is the edit + organize day.

  1. Edit first. We pulled everything out, grouped like with like, and said goodbye to duplicates and worn-out pieces.

  2. Assign homes. Each category got a shelf, drawer, or hanging zone.

  3. Simple folds, consistent hangers. We file-folded soft items for easy visibility, used slim hangers for uniform spacing, and faced everything the same direction.

  4. Labels. Clean, readable labels on baskets and drawers make shared spaces work. No guessing where t-shirts or “game day hoodies” live.

  5. Laundry flow. Mesh bags hang within reach for delicates; hampers sit out of sight but close to the machines. The goal: wash, dry, fold, and put away without leaving the room.

Why Integrate Laundry in the Closet?

  • Fewer trips. Clothes go from hanger → hamper → washer → back to hanger in the same footprint.

  • Less visual noise. Supplies are corralled behind doors; the bedroom stays serene.

  • Better routines. When the path is short and obvious, laundry doesn’t pile up.

Maintenance Made Easy

  • Do a five-minute reset on Sundays: rehang strays, refold a stack, return a hat to its cubby.

  • Keep a donation tote on the floor behind the door—when it’s full, it goes.

  • Swap seasonal items to the highest shelves twice a year (we leave space for this on purpose).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you really put a washer–dryer in a closet?

Yes—when it’s planned correctly. We design around appliance clearances, add proper ventilation, and coordinate plumbing and electrical with licensed trades. Moisture-sensitive items are stored away from the machines, and supplies live behind closed doors.

Do I need a vented or ventless dryer?

Both work in closets. Vented units require an exterior vent; ventless (condensing/heat-pump) dryers don’t, but they do need good airflow and take a bit longer to dry. We’ll recommend the best option based on your home and local code.

How much space do I need?

Every model differs, but a stacked set typically needs a 27”–30” wide bay with 33”–36” depth plus service clearances (about 1” on the sides/top and 4”–6” behind). We also plan for a comfortable 36” walkway.

Will you help edit and organize our clothes, too?

Absolutely. After install, our team sorts, edits, and assigns zones. We fold to fit, switch everything to consistent hangers, and label baskets and drawers so upkeep is simple.

How long does a project like this take?

Typical timelines: design 1–2 weeks, fabrication lead time 3–6 weeks, installation 1–2 days, and one organizing day to finish. Your schedule may vary based on scope and appliance lead times.

How do I start planning a closet-and-laundry project?

Start with a free consultation. We’ll talk through your space, what you need to organize, and your expectations for the project. There is no need to buy organizing supplies beforehand; Home Method handles the measuring, sourcing, shopping, and implementation.

Can you retrofit our existing closet?

In most homes, yes. We verify structure, add dedicated electrical/plumbing, and reconfigure shelving to protect airflow and service clearances.

Is this helpful for resale? (For realtors, too.)

Yes. A calm, built-in system with integrated laundry photographs beautifully and communicates “turnkey, organized living,” which can help listings stand out.

How do we maintain it once it’s done?

Do a five-minute weekly reset (re-hang, re-fold, return baskets), keep a donation tote for quick edits, and follow the manufacturer’s lint and gasket cleaning schedule.

A well-designed closet with an integrated washer–dryer reduces trips, speeds up laundry, and keeps the primary suite serene. By planning clear zones, using the right materials, and finishing with thoughtful organizing, you get a space that works as beautifully as it looks.
